A strong storm is headed towards New England, with heavy rain and gusty winds. Although rain is already falling across New England, the worst impacts from the storm have yet to arrive. Overnight, rainfall will steadily increase in intensity and become more widespread as the storm approached the area. The heaviest bands of rain are expected Monday morning, along with wind gusts increasing over 40mph for most. The highest gusts could exceed 60mph in spots, especially along the coastline and south of Boston. Power outages are a possibility as scattered wind-related tree damage commonly occurs with gusts over 50mph. The heaviest rain and wind will wrap up around lunch time as the center of the storm lifts off to the north. The storm wraps up late afternoon with conditions improving by the evening. Rainfall totals, although substantial, are expected to be about 1″ less than the previous system. Some localized flooding is possible, so do not drive through flooded roadways, and avoi...Week 15 recap: Chicago Bears can’t hold a 10-point lead and lose 20-17 to the Cleveland Browns on a dismal day for the offense

Dustin Hopkins made a 34-yard field goal with 32 seconds to play to lift the Cleveland Browns to a 20-17 victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday. The Bears defense disrupted Browns quarterback Joe Flacco all day, including interceptions by Eddie Jackson, Tremaine Edmunds and Tyrique Stevenson. But Flacco came through when it mattered most. His 51-yard touchdown pass to Amari Cooper tied the game at 17-17 with 3 minutes, 18 seconds to play. Flacco threw a perfect pass between three Bears defenders to Cooper, who ran 25 yards down the right sideline to score. After the Bears offense had to punt on the following drive, Flacco threw two big passes to tight end David Njoku, the first a 31-yarder to get to the Bears 48-yard line. Then on third-and-15, Flacco hit Njoku with a 34-yard pass to the Bears 19.When Hopkins’ field goal sailed through the uprights, it stopped the Bears from nabbing their first three-game winning streak since December 2020.Flacco completed 28 of 44 passes for 37...Russia, Ukraine exchange drone attacks

KYIV, Ukraine — Russia and Ukraine reportedly launched mass drone attacks at each other’s territories for a second straight day Sunday, one of which apparently targeted a Russian military airport. At least 35 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight over three regions in southwestern Russia, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a post on the messaging app Telegram.A Russian air base hosting bomber aircraft used in the war in Ukraine was among the targets, according to a Russian Telegram channel critical of the Kremlin. The channel posted short videos of drones flying over low-rise housing in what it said was the Russian town of Morozovsk, whose air base is home to Russia’s 559th Bomber Aviation Regiment.Vasily Golubev, the governor of Russia’s Rostov province, separately reported “mass drone strikes” near Morozovsk and another town farther west, but didn’t mention the air base. ROME — Pope Francis turned 87 on Sunday, closing out a year that saw big milestones in his efforts to reform the Catholic Church as well as health scares that raise questions about his future as pope.Francis celebrated his birthday with cake during a festive audience with children Sunday morning, and there were “Happy Birthday” banners in St. Peter’s Square during his weekly noon blessing. One early present came Saturday, when a Vatican tribunal handed down a mix of guilty verdicts and acquittals in a complicated trial that Francis had supported as evidence of his financial reforms. The biggest-name defendant, Cardinal Angelo Becciu, was convicted of embezzlement and sentenced to 5½ years in prison.“It was quite a year for a pope who’s obviously thinking about legacy and finishing up,” said Christopher Bellitto, professor of history at Kean University in New Jersey.Only seven popes are known to have been older than Francis at the time of their deat...Will there be snow on Christmas? Massachusetts’ Democratic governor would not accept a position in a theoretical second Biden Administration; if one were offered, that is.During an end-of-year, in-person interview with the Herald, Gov. Maura Healey reflected on her first year in office and discussed her plans for the years ahead. According to the former attorney general, she is very happy in her role as chief executive of the Commonwealth and doesn’t intend to go anywhere.“I am governor of Massachusetts and I want to do the very best job that I can do here. I feel really privileged to serve and, you know, it’s been a year. It’s been a year that’s been fast and full and there is so much more to do. I wake up every day — well, most every day — I wake up and I’m just really enthusiastic about the work we can do. I do wake up every day optimistic about this state. I really do,” she said. That’s not to say that President Joe Biden has not been a friend to Massachusetts, Healey said. He’s been a “great partner,” acc...Mass. Secretary of State: voting is the tool for keeping Trump from ballot

The state’s chief elections officer seems less than enthusiastic about attempts to remove former President Donald Trump’s name from statewide ballots via a Civil War-era clause in the U.S. Constitution.Efforts elsewhere to see the 45th President removed under Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment, and some lawsuits in the Bay State aimed at forcing Secretary of State Bill Galvin to strike Trump’s name from consideration, are not how Galvin would prefer to do business, he said.“Four states, so far, have already ruled against those efforts,” he said during an interview with WCVB. “We’ve had one suit filed against us, which has now been dismissed, but there may well be others. The problem with all of this litigation is that it doesn’t attack the real issue with regard to what President — former president — Trump, and that’s the issue of eligibility.”Trump is ineligible to seek the presidency and should be removed from the ballot, according to some legal scholars who say his involve...Patriots have no answers after J.C. FOXBORO — Patriots cornerback J.C. Jackson was active in Sunday’s 27-17 loss to the Chiefs but didn’t play a single snap and wasn’t spotted on the sideline.Jackson’s agent, Neil Schwartz, told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Jackson is dealing with mental health issues. It seems something must have occured between 11:30 a.m. ET when inactives were announced and 1 p.m. when the game started. If the Patriots had known Jackson wasn’t going to play, then cornerback Shaun Wade likely would not have been included on the inactive list.
