OSLO, Norway (AP) — NATO on Thursday ramped up pressure on member nation Turkey to drop its objections to Sweden’s membership as the military organization seeks to deal with the issue by the time U.S. President Joe Biden and his counterparts meet next month.The 31-member alliance is also looking at boosting Ukraine’s non-member status in NATO and preparing a framework for security commitments that it can offer once the war with Russia is over. Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said NATO wants to bring Sweden into the fold by the time allied leaders meet in Lithuania on July 11-12. BLUE ISLAND, Ill. — An investigation is underway after a man was fatally shot by police in Blue Island.Around 2 a.m. Thursday, police responded to the area of Broadway and Division for a suspicious vehicle and well-being check of a man who was unresponsive in the driver's seat.Upon arrival, police said officers observed an AR-15 pistol on the front passenger seat of the vehicle. Additional officers arrived to the scene as attempts were made to wake the man.According to police, the man finally woke up and saw the officers — then reached for the front passenger seat.Police said one officer then fired one round and shot the man in the torso area. He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead. (NEXSTAR) - Budget airline Spirit is warning travelers they may experience "longer than usual lines" on Thursday as the company faces "a technical issue."Details are limited, but the airline says the issue had caused its website, its app, and its airport kiosks to be unavailable as of 8 a.m. CT. Interstate 694 in Oakdale is open again after a wrong-way crash early Thursday killed two drivers and sent a juvenile to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.The driver of a Toyota Corolla was traveling south in the northbound left lane of I-694 and crashed head-on into the Pontiac Vibe traveling north at 2:24 a.m. near Stillwater Boulevard, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The Pontiac Vibe spun out and hit a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van in the northbound right lane.The Pontiac’s driver was ejected from his vehicle and died. A commercial building in Signal Hill was partially destroyed by a fire Thursday morning.The blaze in the building at 1717 E. 28th St., which appears to be a Parts Plus store, broke out around 5:40 a.m.By about 6 a.m., it had been declared a second-alarm fire.Aerial footage from the scene showed that as of 6:30 a.m., the flames seemed to be mostly under control though they had burned through much of the building's roof.The fire appeared to have been prevented from spreading to other structures.Latest news
