The AG’s office has fielded four complaints about Mayor Michelle Wu’s highly criticized “electeds of color” holiday party — a bash that included an email uninviting white city councilors. The Dec. 13 party, however, did not appear to violate the public accommodation law “since it was not open to the public,” state Attorney General Andrea Campbell’s office told the Herald in an email.Three of the complaints were from out of state and the other did not contain an address, the AG’s office added. A spokesperson would not confirm or deny if any investigation was launched as a result of the complaints.Under Massachusetts law, the AG enforces the public accommodation law, which “prohibits discrimination in places of public accommodation” based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, deafness, blindness, or any physical or mental disability, or ancestry.Campbell is a former city councilor...Police resume search for Quebec girl, four, who fell in river while sledding

DOLBEAU-MISTASSINI, Que. — Quebec provincial police say the search for a four-year-old girl who fell in a river in the province’s Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region resumed this morning.Rescuers have been searching for the girl since she went through a fence while sledding and fell in the Mistassibi River, around 242 kilometres northwest of Quebec City, on Friday afternoon.Police spokesman Sgt. Hugues Beaulieu says police are using a drone today, which can access areas that are difficult to reach on foot.He says the search has been complicated by the winter conditions and the terrain of the riverbank, which requires divers to use a crane to access the water.Beaulieu wouldn’t say whether police still hope to find the girl alive. The child was sledding with her mother when she slipped through a barrier along the riverbank and ended up in the water. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 24, 2023. “ Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ” led a crowd of new releases at the box office on the weekend before Christmas Monday. The DC and Warner Bros. superhero sequel starring Jason Momoa earned an estimated $28.1 million in its first three days of release in 3,706 locations in North America, according to studio estimates Sunday. By Monday it is projected to have around $40 million in domestic ticket sales.Despite many new offerings — including the family friendly animated film “ Migration,” the R-rated romantic comedy “Anyone But You,” the wrestling tragedy “ The Iron Claw ” and a ghostly tearjerker in “ All of Us Strangers ” — this will go down as a quieter pre-holiday frame at the box office. Moviegoing audiences perhaps just had other priorities than going to the cinema. It is never great for Hollywood or theaters when Christmas Eve falls on a prime weekend day, but the last time Christmas was on a Monday, in 2017, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” dominated the four-day charts with $71.5 mil...Arkansas man accused of making pipe bombs, trying to flee U.S. in kayak

Doctors explain why

Is there a chance you still have COVID-19? Could it be something else? The answer – to both questions – is yes.“If you are feeling symptomatic and you test negative for COVID-19, usually the most likely reason is you’re infected with something else besides COVID-19,” said Dr. Andrew Pekosz, a virologist and professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, during a media briefing. 5 things to know about the new COVID variant of interest, JN.1 After all, two other respiratory viruses, influenza and RSV, are starting to circulate at high levels in many states, and all three illnesses have overlapping symptoms. But Pekosz went on to say that a negative test doesn’t really change much as far as next steps go.“If you’re feeling sick, there really should be no dif...'Euphoria' star Wanna Walton to make pro boxing debut

DETROIT — Darius Taylor says angst about his future with the Gophers football program was much ado about nothing. After the true freshman tailback led the Big Ten in rushing yards through September, fears set in that Taylor might exit via the NCAA transfer portal, taking a possible bigger package of name, image and likeness (NIL) compensation from another school. That concern emanated from head coach P.J. Fleck down to random aliases posting on message boards. The precedent of Mar’Keise “Bucky” Irving leaving the U for Oregon after his true freshman year in 2021 made the experience visceral.A public exhale came when Taylor posted on social media on Dec. 2 that he would return to the U for his sophomore season in 2024. He mentioned Dinkytown Athletes, the Gophers’ NIL collective, in his post.“There wasn’t really a process,” Taylor told the Pioneer Press on Saturday. “I just love it here. Great experience. I haven’t had anything bad or negative in any way. ...Trudy Rubin: Ways to help victims of war this holiday season

This holiday season is a bleak time for Ukrainian civilians facing another winter of brutal Russian bombing — especially when GOP members of Congress have sent Vladimir Putin a huge Christmas gift by blocking further U.S. aid to Kyiv.It is also a tragic time for Israeli civilians traumatized by Hamas’ vicious attack, and for Palestinian civilians in Gaza suffering horribly from Israel’s military response. For those who are frustrated by a sense of helplessness and wondering how to help, one way is to donate to charities that are reaching civilians on the ground. In Ukraine, as soldiers battle on the front, civilian volunteer groups have held the country together. From the start of the war, women and men excused from the front lines have banded together to feed people in urban bomb shelters, rescue elderly Ukrainians from villages under fire, provide generators for those without heat and electricity, and help the internally displaced and wounded. The courage of ordinar...67-year-old arrested for alleged Price Chopper theft
