First came the Michelin stars. Now comes the attention. Denver has one of the best restaurant dishes in the country, according to The New York Times.Bruto’s freshly charred bread from Hearth bakery and coffee shop in RiNo was featured on the newspaper’s list of 23 of the “Best American Dishes of 2023.”“Fresh-baked bread service is fairly common these days, but the version here is something special,” wrote The New York Times’ Brian Gallagher. “Made from Colorado grain milled nearby, the personal-size boules are popped into an oak-fired oven for a mere minute and a half before being handed across the counter to you, piping hot, dotted with char and served with rotating pairings like housemade achiote butter or mole blanco dipping sauce.”Bruto, 1801 Blake St., is having a record year for accolades. The small, Mexican-inspired omakase restaurant led by chef Michael Diaz de Leon, was one of five Colorado restaurants to earn a Michelin...Affidavit details fatal road rage shooting at Tesla charging station in Edgewater

An arrest affidavit for the Denver man accused in a fatal road rage shooting at a Tesla supercharger station outside Edgewater Public Market in May sheds light on the seven-month police investigation, the length of which sparked outcry from the victim’s family and justice advocates.Jeremy Alan Smith, 39, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the May 3 shooting of 33-year-old Adam Fresquez.Smith appeared in Jefferson County district court Wednesday, where a judge set a $300,000 cash-only bail in the case, according to court records.Smith’s arrest affidavit, which was filed Tuesday, details the Edgewater Police Department’s investigation into the shooting from the first 911 call to the final forensic test results that came back just last week. While Smith invoked his right to remain silent when he was detained by police on May 3, he called 911 roughly six minutes after the shooting and told a dispatcher he sprayed pepper spray and shot someone fo...Black Coloradans, less likely to own a home or have a degree, deserve a deeper study of racial inequities, lawmakers say

Several state lawmakers want to zero in on deep-rooted disparities that are holding back Black Coloradans economically, from low homeownership to disproportionately high incarceration rates, and expand the search for solutions. That’s the aim of legislation unveiled Wednesday that would charge History Colorado, the state’s historical society, with undertaking a comprehensive study into the reverberations of slavery and systemic racism, including examining how they still affect Black Coloradans today. A steering committee that includes experts in several fields would advise the effort. The study, which could be paid for through fundraising rather than state funding, would result in recommendations for policy proposals to bridge those gaps — along with ideas to address the ongoing challenges Black Coloradans face.“We have a responsibility as lawmakers to investigate and understand the wrongs of the past, to study historic and ongoing racial discrimination in our ...Amazon pilots new grocery subscription service in Denver, two other cities

Shawn Bergin has risen a long way since he started baking loaves of bread and pastries out of his basement in 2019.The owner of Bakery Four started his patisserie out of his Denver home, selling naturally leavened sourdough loves and fresh croissants at pop-ups and farmers’ markets. He then moved into a 350-square-foot space in Denver’s Highland neighborhood, which garnered hour-long lines starting at 6:30 a.m. as fans waited patiently for his cinnamon-dusted morning buns and chocolate croissants made with European butter. The demand was too much for the tiny shop — Bergin could only fit about five customers inside at a time — and he began looking for a bigger space, eventually opening his existing 3,000-square-foot location, at 4150 Tennyson St., last year (a separate bagel shop, Rich Spirit, will also open soon in Wheat Ridge. But there are still lines down the block, and Bergin and his team still struggle to bake enough product to keep up.“Everything moved...A Christmas tree tradition that starts with pierogies rather than pickles

I was in my thirties before I learned about the Christmas tradition of hiding the pickle. (No, really.) You hang a pickle ornament on your tree and the child who finds it first on Christmas Day wins … something. The practice may have originated in Germany, but Poles (who love their Christmas traditions) often did it as well.We never got to find the pickle when I was growing up in a Polish family on the East Coast. Instead, my mom would change our Christmas tree decorations often: one year, silver balls and tinsel with huge pink ribbons; another year, red bows with white orbs and white beaded chains. And so on. I don’t recall ever being excited about trimming the tree as a kid; there was no emotional connection to any of the ob...What to do this weekend: 200 merry tubas, birthday beers, “Elf” and s’mores
