Warriors make surprising lineup change ahead of Game 2 vs. Lakers The Warriors made a starting lineup change ahead of Thursday’s Game 2 against the Los Angeles Lakers. But while removing Kevon Looney was somewhat expected, who they replaced him with was the surprise. It’ll be JaMychal Green starting alongside Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green.Part of the reason for the swap is that Looney isn’t feeling well, the Warriors said before Thursday’s tip, but he’s expected to still play tonight. There was some discussion that Golden State would opt to go small and bring Jordan Poole into the starting lineup for Looney. Instead, JaMychal Green will make just his second start as a Warrior since signing last offseason (Dec. 7 at Utah) and try to provide some added 3-point shooting without sacrificing size. The Warriors may be hoping JaMychal Green can give them a similar impact to what Otto Porter did in 2021-22 as the Warriors stormed their way to an NBA title. He hasn’t been an exact replaceme...

Feds fine McDonald’s franchisees for employing children Associated PressLOUISVILLE, Ky. — Two 10-year-olds are among 300 children who worked at McDonald’s restaurants illegally, a Labor Department investigation of franchisees in Kentucky found.Agency investigators found the 10-year-olds received little or no pay at a McDonald’s in Louisville, the Labor Department said. The franchisee for the Louisville store was among three McDonald’s franchisees fined $212,000 in total by the department.Louisville’s Bauer Food LLC, which operates 10 McDonald’s locations, employed 24 minors under the age of 16 to work more hours than legally permitted, the agency said. Among those were two 10-year-old children. The agency said the children sometimes worked as late as 2 a.m., but were not paid.“Below the minimum age for employment, they prepared and distributed food orders, cleaned the store, worked at the drive-thru window and operated a register,” the Labor Department said Tuesday, adding that one child also was...

Antioch police racism could lead to unprecedented mass dismissals in criminal court, county writes $2.2 million check to address problem The ongoing racist text messaging scandal that has impugned dozens of Antioch officers could shake up the local justice system on a scale never before seen in California history as prosecutors and judges are assessing whether to dismiss hundreds if not thousands of criminal cases and convictions. The problem is so widespread that both the Contra Costa District Attorney and Public Defender’s offices fear buckling under the unprecedented workload. Late last month, the county Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed to help by spending $2.2 million for the hiring of 10 attorneys, five for each agency. Those news hires — who represent the beginning of the widening scandal’s impact on county taxpayers — will work to sort out just how deep the problems at the Antioch Police Department run.“The behavior of these officers has far-reaching consequences and has harmed individuals who may have been unfairly accused or prosecuted,” Supervisor John Gioia said aft...

Sisak and Jennifer Peltz | Associated PressNEW YORK — Donald Trump hinted Thursday that he might show up soon at the New York City trial where a jury is hearing allegations that he raped a woman in the mid-1990s.The former president’s lawyers insist that he won’t attend the proceedings or testify. Now the judge is offering him one last chance to change his mind. After writer E. Jean Carroll’s lawyers rested their case, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan was reluctant to let Trump’s lawyers rest their case without calling any witnesses. He said he would give Trump until 5 p.m. Sunday to provide his final answer about testifying in his own defense in response to Carroll’s allegations that he sexually assaulted her at a posh Manhattan department store in spring 1996.“If he has second thoughts, I’ll at least consider it,” Kaplan said in court after the jury had been sent home for the day, adding that if Trump misses the deadline, “That ship will be irrevocabl...

Warriors’ Steve Kerr: Firing of Bucks’ coach latest example how ‘it happens quickly’ SAN FRANCISCO — Steve Kerr relayed an ominous stat Thursday, before the Warriors tried to even their conference-semifinals series with the Lakers.“Three of the last four championship coaches have been fired,” Kerr said. “It just happens quickly. I mean, expectations every year for every team are so high, and only one team can win.”Earlier Thursday, the Milwaukee Bucks fired Mike Budenholzer, two years after he led them to the NBA title but only a day after his top-seeded team got eliminated in the first round by the Miami Heat.“It’s sad news for the coaching profession,” Kerr added. “We all believe Bud deserved a lot better. But we’re all aware this is the job we chose.”Also out of a job not long after hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy were: Nick Nurse, from the Toronto Raptors on April 21, four years after beating the Warriors in the NBA Finals; and, Frank Vogel, from the Lakers in April 2022, two years after winning the f...

State police to end 24/7 coverage in Reno amid high turnover Truck driver Kim Santiago’s delivery routes between Utah and California routinely take him through Reno, Nevada, while most people are still asleep. After countless trips through northern Nevada, Santiago is now likely to find himself traveling on Reno’s highways during a gap in state trooper police coverage prompted by a critical staffing shortage. State law enforcement leaders and union officials had warned for years that the shortage would impact public safety if left unaddressed. “Is anyone gonna come help if there’s an accident?” said Santiago, a truck driver since 2019. “How long will that take?”Nevada State Police confirmed this week they don’t have enough troopers to maintain around-the-clock coverage in parts of Washoe County, the state’s second most populous county, which includes Reno. The agency did not respond to multiple requests from The Associated Press seeking additional information. But a police union representing state police officers told AP it w...
