NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Rodón earned his first victory in four starts with the New York Yankees, who got an offensive spark from Harrison Bader in beating the New York Mets 3-1 on Wednesday night for a two-game split of their Subway Series.Bader had three hits and scored twice at Yankee Stadium, including an aggressive dash and headfirst dive into home plate. Rodón (1-3) outpitched fellow lefty José Quintana before four Yankees relievers combined to retire all 10 batters they faced.Clay Holmes worked the ninth for his 14th save in 17 chances, giving the Yankees a four-game split of the season series with the Mets. The crosstown rivals also split two games last month at Citi Field. It was an encouraging outing for Rodón, who got off to a rough start in his Yankees tenure after signing a $162 million, six-year contract as a free agent in December. The two-time All-Star missed the first three-plus months of the season because of forearm and back injuries, then lost his first three starts...Self-defense expert offers tips following reports of Jeffco trail predator

Ukrainian forces are intensifying efforts to retake territory on the front lines, increasing attacks and committing additional soldiers to the battlefield, three Defense Department officials said Wednesday.Kyiv is beginning to send thousands of well-trained reinforcements, which it had previously held in reserve during the beginning stages of the counteroffensive, to the front lines, said one of the DOD officials, all of whom were granted anonymity to discuss a developing situation.Reports from the battlefield also indicated that Ukraine had launched a major new attack in the southeast of the country. Ukrainian forces attacked south of the town of Orikhiv in the Zaporizhzhia region, deploying three battalions reinforced with tanks, Russia’s Defense Ministry said Wednesday. One of Ukraine’s goals is to reach the Sea of Azov, about 60 miles south of Orikhiv, cutting off Russian forces between the south and east of the country, said the first DOD official. The New York Times first report...Mets Notebook: Amazins trying to tune out trade deadline noise

“Taking the season one game at a time” might be the biggest cliche in sports, but it’s actually appropriate for the Mets right now. Every game matters right now with the Mets trying to climb the standings before the trade deadline next Tuesday.A veteran clubhouse doesn’t necessarily need to remind everyone to focus on the task ahead instead of letting their mind drift toward deadline news and rumors, but that isn’t always as easy it sounds.“It’s hard to not wonder,” outfielder Brandon Nimmo said Wednesday before the Subway Series finale at Yankee Stadium. “That’s one of the challenges. You sit there and say, ‘OK, this scenario would be fun, this could be awesome.’ But none of that matters if I don’t focus on today and take care of today.”With televisions in most MLB clubhouses set to MLB Network or ESPN, even the players who stay off social media will still hear the speculation. Some of it is simply ...Yankees claim there’s no set plan for Aaron Judge following report of Friday return

With Aaron Judge in Tampa for simulated games, barring a setback, the reported plan is for the slugger to return on Friday in Baltimore. The story was published by The Post in the middle of Aaron Boone’s pregame press conference on Wednesday, which prompted a question directly asking if there is a plan in place to activate Judge on Friday.“No,” Boone said of the report before the conclusion of the Subway Series. “I wouldn’t rule anything out, but I think we’re kind of taking it day by day and huddling up at the end of the day and seeing what the next steps are. But right now, it’s seeing how we came out of today and how that went and where we’re at and if we need to keep doing more.”Boone has repeatedly said that the Yankees are not ruling anything out — or similar phrases — when asked about various target dates for Judge’s return throughout his rehab process. Shortly after his press conference, Boone was asked d...Revolution romp past Atlético de San Luis, 5-1

Yankees fans weren’t thrilled when Carlos Rodón blew a kiss in frustration at hecklers his last time out, but few had any issue with the southpaw shouting a few swears on Wednesday night.Rodón, coming off the worst start of his young Yankees career, showed emotion once again on Wednesday night. This time, however, the situation garnered more approval for the pitcher’s competitive nature, as Rodón dropped a few cuss words after striking out the Mets’ Pete Alonso on three straight sliders to end the fifth inning with runners on first and second. The Alonso at-bat was the highlight of the night for Rodón, who had to battle despite holding the Mets to one run over 5.2 innings in a 3-1 Yankees win. Rodón, pitching in front of Yankees fans for the first time since his criticized kiss, totaled four hits, three walks and four strikeouts over 93 pitches. He also hit Jeff McNeil square in the back with a 95-mph fastball in the fourth inning. All options are on the table for the Mets right now when it comes to how to proceed with the rest of the 2023 season. One of those options includes trading right-handed aces, Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer. That would be a nuclear option for the Mets. The front office has not expressed interest in exercising this option, but given the state of the underachieving club, it’s a possibility that has to be considered. However, it appears to be one that Verlander himself had not considered until the subject was broached during the Subway Series at Yankees Stadium this week. Verlander is “not really” aware of the Aug. 1 deadline at the moment.“I’m just trying to focus on what’s ahead of me,” Verlander said. “I would hope that if there is any chance of [being traded] that [general manager Billy Eppler] would come and talk to me. That hasn’t happened, so I’m focused on being a Met.”Verlander’s contract runs through 2024...Latest news
