With the first overall pick in the inaugural PWHL draft, Minnesota’s team selected former Gophers center Taylor Heise on Monday in Toronto.Heise, 23, was the 2022 Patty Kazmaier Award winner and led the NCAA scoring in each of her last two seasons with the Gophers. The pick was not unexpected. A native of Lake City, Minn., Heise was a no-brainer for Minnesota general manager Natalie Darwitz, who spent the last two years as Heise’s position coach at her alma mater.Currently training in Blaine with Team USA, Heise made her international debut last fall in the IIHF world championships and scored seven goals and 18 points as the U.S. won the silver medal. She was named the tournament’s top forward and most valuable player.“It’s my home. Everyone I love is there. And it’s the State of Hockey,” Heise said on the CBC’s livestream. “I’m just honored that I’m going to be able to play and to show little girls that anything is possible if you keep working hard.”With the ...T.J. T.J. Maxx, a discount retailer and one of the last remaining department stores in St. Paul’s Midway neighborhood, will close its location at 1410 University Ave. W. permanently on Oct. 8, capping 10 years at the site, according to an announcement posted at the shop entrance. The clothing and home goods retailer — located in the Midway Marketplace strip mall anchored by a Cub Foods grocery — opened in October 2013. Decades ago, the area was a prime destination for shopping, car sales, hotels and even dancing and proms. The last decade has been a difficult one for retail in general, given the advent of online shopping in the “Amazon era,” a pandemic that led to widespread lockdowns for restaurants and retailers, and the May 2020 riots and property damage that followed the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis.Courtney Igbo of St. Paul sweeps up debris at the T.J. Toward the end of the movie Oppenheimer, President Harry S. Truman accuses the title character of being a “cry baby scientist.” The comment, true to history though it was said privately to staff, so completely diminishes the brilliant physicist’s anguish over the detonation of the first atomic bombs that he helped create. If that’s all the viewer knows of that president, one would think Truman a small man who lacked empathy for Oppenheimer and the more than 214,000 people who died from the blasts by 1945. Yet Truman was anything but; he oversaw the Marshall Plan, the Berlin Airlift, and the desegregation of the U.S. Armed Forces. When viewed in the context of their life and times, it is clear that both men’s contributions to history were far greater than their failings.
