WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Mike Johnson unveiled his proposal on Saturday to avoid a partial government shutdown by extending government funding for some agencies and programs until Jan. 19 and continuing funding for others until Feb. 2.The approach is unusual for a stopgap spending bill. Usually, lawmakers extend funding until a certain date for all programs. Johnson decided to go with the combination approach, addressing concerns from GOP lawmakers seeking to avoid being presented with a massive spending bill just before the holidays.“This two-step continuing resolution is a necessary bill to place House Republicans in the best position to fight for conservative victories,” Johnson said in a statement after speaking with GOP lawmakers in an afternoon conference call. “The bill will stop the absurd holiday-season omnibus tradition of massive, loaded up spending bills introduced right before the Christmas recess.”The bill excludes funding requested by President Joe ...‘Modern day bank robbery’: Still no answers 2 weeks after Toronto Public Library cyber attack

Chanhassen has been widely considered the cream of the crop in Class 5A football this season. But Mahtomedi put a sizable scare into the Storm’s quest for a championship.Charlie Brandt ran for two scores and threw for another, but the Zephyrs came up 80 seconds short of an upset in Saturday’s state quarterfinal.Defensive lineman Dominic Castagnetto capped a 12-play, 76-yard, nearly five-minute drive with a 2-yard run out of the power package with 1:20 left as the Storm rallied for a 28-22 win. It’s the second straight week Castagnetto scored late to let Chanhassen advance. His short run with 34 seconds left gave the Storm a 37-36 win over perennial-power Mankato West last week.“Two in a row is nice, but it’s better that we won,” he said.Mahtomedi, which got a 25-yard field goal by Charlie Thein for a 22-20 lead with 7:14 to play, got the ball on its own 38 after Castagnetto’s score, but a sack and three incompletions allowed Chanhassen to celebrate.Finishing 4-4 in the regular season,...State football: Savion Hart runs wild as St. Thomas Academy downs Owatonna in Class 5A quarterfinals

Wild need to build on ‘positives’

Jared Spurgeon looked a little worse for wear after playing his first game of the season on Friday in Buffalo, N.Y., but by NHL standards, he was healthy — just a healthy fat lip after being hit by a Casey Mittelstadt stick.“Right back into it,” he said after the Wild’s 3-2 loss to the Sabres at KeyBank Center. “My modeling career is over.”It was the Wild’s 14th game of the season, and patterns have developed for Minnesota, most notably slow starts, inconsistent play and defensive lapses — by forwards and blue liners — that have so far added up to a 5-7-2 start. For Spurgeon, it was new, and with him back in the lineup, the Wild played the kind of game they typically play and have, more often than not, won the past several seasons. So, when the team captain was asked if the Wild need a reset, Spurgeon was a little incredulous.“It’s early in the year,” he said. “We’ve just got to keep with it and correct those things. The offseason moves have begun. The Twins picked up the club options on second baseman Jorge Polanco ($10.5 million) and Max Kepler last week. They also extended a qualifying offer to starting pitcher Sonny Gray. Gray, who is widely expected to decline the offer and test free agency, has until Nov. 14 to make a decision. As the offseason begins, it has become clear that the Twins’ payroll will not be as high as it was in 2023, in part because of the end of their television contract, when it was at their all-time high around $155 million. That could force the Twins to be more creative when trying to address roster needs this season. Here’s a look at three of their most important areas to address this winter:Starting pitchingKenta Maeda is a free agent. And in a matter of days, if Gray declines the qualifying offer, he will be a free agent as well — and one who will likely command a multi-year deal richer than what Twins would be willing to offer him.The Twins have Pablo López, Joe Ryan...Latest news
