Vermont farmers are urged to document crop losses from flooding By LISA RATHKE (Associated Press)ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. (AP) — Vermont state and federal officials on Monday urged farmers to document and report damage from the catastrophic flooding that hit the state two weeks ago and inundated crops in the rural mountainous state known for its scenic farmland. They toured Paul Mazza’s Fruit and Vegetable farm, where fields were under 20 feet (6 meters) of water during the flooding, including row after row of blueberry bushes laden with berries and corn. The crops are now contaminated and unsellable. Mazza, who has seven farms in different locations, estimates he has about 25% of his produce left. Fields are covered with sediment and piles of sand from the river. “It’s a killer. My head just spins,” Mazza said. “I lost my shirt,” he added.A 2021 state government report on Vermont agriculture credited maple producers, apple orchards, farms, cheese, and ice cream for having “long defined the Vermont expe...

A regular visit with your doctor is quickly becoming a thing of the past Dr. Chris Hakim lives in a version of the not-so-distant past.He practices modern medicine and spends as much time as he likes with patients without issue — a departure from the growing trend in health care.“The patient is now seeing a physician who doesn’t decide how much time he spends with a given patient,” Hakim said. “Those things are dictated by someone else. There are guidelines to everything and they come from administration.”Over the 35 years Hakim has been working in health care, he’s learned the heartbeat of good care’s rhythm is the trust and relationship between patient and provider. His second 15 years practicing and running an independent practice with up to 25 employees, he saw how things were changing and adapted as best he could. But those forces causing changes have been “turbocharged” in recent years, according to Hakim. The rheumatologist saw firsthand how some patients, particularly older ones, struggled to deal with the shifting landscape of obtaining care from...

Treason, contempt, exposing secrets. Legal challenges against Pakistan’s Imran Khan keep growing ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan was granted bail Monday by the country’s Supreme Court in a case related to a lawyer’s murder while the nation’s election oversight body demanded his arrest in a separate, contempt case in which he failed to show up for questioning. The developments are the latest in unprecedented legal imbroglios surrounding the former premier, now the country’s top opposition leader. Since his ouster from power in a no-confidence vote in the parliament in April last year, Khan has been slapped with more than 150 legal cases, including several on charges of corruption, “terrorism” and inciting people to violence over deadly protests in May that saw his followers attack government and military property across the country. Also last week, the government of Khan’s successor, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, said it would bring charges against Khan for “exposing an official secret document” in an incident last...

Ottawa reveals conditions for allowing future fossil fuel subsidies MONTREAL — Ottawa is restricting the conditions under which it will allow subsidies to the fossil fuel industry, but is leaving untouched — for now — the industry’s largest source of public financing. On Monday, Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault released six rules that are now to shape how Canada supports the industry.“What we’re eliminating are federal supports that are directed to the oil and gas sector, and gives the oil and gas sector an economic advantage,” Guilbeault said in Montreal. Subsidies will be allowed if they support clean energy. Companies that reduce their greenhouse-gas emissions or have a credible plan to achieve net zero by 2030 could also be supported.Subsidies aiding Indigenous involvement in the industry will continue, as will those that support service to a remote community or form part of an emergency response. The federal Liberals will also permit subsidies that align with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which allows countries t...
