Many of the top experts in college football expect Cal to play in the Independence Bowl against Texas Tech when it returns to the postseason for the first time in four years. As for San Jose State, the picture is less clear for its second straight bowl appearance after the Spartans were left out of the Mountain West title game based on computer rankings. The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy projects the Spartans to head west to the Hawaii Bowl and face Rice. Fox Sports and 247Sports both had them in the same Dec. 23 bowl, though Bryan Fischer of Fox projected SJSU to face Memphis.CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm, on the other hand, projected them to join Cal in the South, for a Birmingham Bowl date against Georgia State.Meanwhile, ESPN’s Mark Schlabaugh projected a Boca Raton Bowl berth against Marshall, while Kyle Bonagura had them facing Ohio in a return to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, where they lost last year to Eastern Michigan. The projections vary because the Mountain We...San Jose Sharks hit with another injury as No. 1 center will miss game vs. Capitals

SAN JOSE — A San Jose Sharks team that was just starting to gain some confidence after an atrocious start to the season will now have to play without No. 1 center Tomas Hertl, who is considered day-to-day with an unspecified injury.Sharks coach David Quinn said Hertl was injured on Sunday when he and the team had the day off. Quinn refused to be specific about what happened to Hertl other than to say the ailment was around his midsection.Quinn said, though, that Hertl would join the Sharks on their upcoming road trip that starts Thursday in Boston against the Bruins.Hertl leads the Sharks with 16 points in 21 games this season and is averaging 20:56 in ice time per game, tops among all San Jose forwards. Before Monday, Hertl had 11 points in 11 games, helping spur the Sharks to a 4-6-1 record in that time after a 0-9-1 start to the season. The Sharks, now with a 4-1-1 record at home since the first week of November, are already without injured top-nine forwards Logan Couture (l...Why environmentalists are suing the National Park Service to prevent it from planting trees

By Jonathan Park and Janna Van Vranken | CNNThe National Park Service wants to replant sequoia groves in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, where wildfires in 2020 and 2021 inflicted lasting damage on the iconic sequoia forests. Environmentalists in California say it’s a huge mistake.Four groups filed suit against the NPS on November 17, saying the agency’s effort violates the law as it includes planting in designated wilderness areas, where human involvement in the ecosystem is explicitly prohibited. The NPS announced the seedling-planting project earlier this fall, saying it was “concerned that natural regeneration may not be sufficient to support self-sustaining groves into the future, particularly as the fires killed an unprecedented number of reproductive sequoia trees in the groves themselves.”Chad Hanson, the director of the John Muir Project, one of the groups that filed suit, disputes that conclusion. Sequoias are among the species of trees that actually “depend on hig...Police identify Oakland rapper killed during early morning confrontation

The following article is adapted from the new book, “The Squad: AOC and the Hope of a Political Revolution,” out December 5, 2023.In May 2021, the Israeli government began pushing ahead with evictions of Palestinians in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem. It was one more creeping step forward in an occupation and annexation process that had been under way for decades, but what was new this time was the reaction of Hamas, the government in Gaza. If Israel didn’t back off its plan to evict the families and the Palestinian Authority wouldn’t stand up for the homeowners in Sheikh Jarrah, Hamas announced, they would do it themselves. The Israeli government did not back off, as was to be expected, and Hamas responded by launching rocket attacks into Israel, attacks that were intercepted by the U.S.-built Iron Dome air-defense system or that otherwise crashed to the earth. Israel launched an assault on Gaza, and what became known as the Gaza War of 2021 broke out.In Gaza wars ...Latest news
