Loons avoid another Open Cup nightmare with 3-1 win over Detroit City For an hour Tuesday, Minnesota United’s play in the U.S. Open Cup provided deja vu and the dread that came with it.The Loons fell behind 1-0 in the fifth minute to Detroit City, harkening to a massive upset loss to Union Omaha in the national tournament last May.But MNUFC broke free with three goals in over six minutes to avoid an upset with a 3-1 win in a third-round Open Cup match at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, Mich. The Loons advance to the Open Cup’s round of 32 on May 9-10; the draw for that matchup is Thursday. It wasn’t just allowing an early goal Tuesday that rekindled nightmares of when Minnesota gave up a lead and lost 2-1 to third-tier Omaha in St. Paul a year ago, but that there was little response to falling behind in the first half and into the second.Minnesota didn’t register a shot on goal for the first 53 minutes Tuesday and slumping striker Luis Amarilla missed an easy tap-in in the eight minute.Add in that Detroit City had been here before. The club in the second...

Kurtenbach: To beat the Kings, the Warriors will have to do something for the first time this season SAN FRANCISCO — What’s the opposite of a road warrior? That’s what the 2022-23 Golden State Warriors are. If the Warriors are to beat the Kings and advance to the second round of the NBA Playoffs, they will have to do something they failed to do all season: win a road game against a playoff-level opponent. Yes, while the Warriors only won 11 of 41 road games all season, not one of those wins came against a full-strength version of a top-six seed in either conference. 'Star witness' in Oakland murder trial was a liar, DA says OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) -- A veteran Oakland homicide detective was charged by prosecutors Tuesday with a slew of crimes for allegedly paying off a fake "star witness" for a murder trial that resulted in life prison sentences. Aisha Weber lied about witnessing the murder of Charles Butler Jr., 23, after he was fatally shot on Dec. 22, 2011, prosecutors said. Weber testified against two murder defendants, Cartier Hunter and Giovante Douglas, during a 2016 jury trial. The two men were found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. Weber lied under oath because she had been coerced and paid off by Oakland Police Department homicide detective Phong Tran, according to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. District Attorney Pamela Price announced Tuesday that her office is charging Tran with committing perjury and bribing a witness.Weber, a homeless mother of two, told investigators that she was "desperate at the time" for money, the DA's Office wrote. Weber later admitted that she...
