(WHNT) — Monday, June 19, marks Juneteenth, a federally-recognized holiday in the U.S. That also means you won't be getting any mail on June 19, at least not from the U.S. Postal Service.Juneteenth commemorates when the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were free – two months after the end of the Civil War and more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. AUSTIN (KXAN) — Lake Travis Fire Rescue Chief Robert Abbott knows the heartache.Families in his community including his department impacted by overdoses and fentanyl. "Hits home — I mean you start going, is this in my backyard — no, it's your front yard," Abbott said. In 2021, his Assistant Fire Chief, Mike Prather, lost his son to a fentanyl overdose. Prather recalled a frantic call from his wife saying she couldn't wake up their son, Kyle. "I've been in the fire services for 23 years — here in my mind being a healthy 25-year-old kid — this could be an overdose. All I could think about was my wife was about to try to resuscitate her son the same way I've tried to resuscitate people for years." Prather said emotionally. The department started raising awareness through PSAs about the tragic losses and the need to better track overdoses. CicLAvia is celebrating Juneteenth by closing down part of Vermont Avenue in Gramercy Park on Sunday so that pedestrians, bicyclists and people of all ages and mobility levels can enjoy what the vibrant neighborhood has to offer. Vermont Avenue between Exposition Boulevard and Century Boulevard will be closed from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. to allow participants to enjoy live performances, food trucks and fun for the entire family.In addition, on-site record expungement, mental health services, tenant support and more will all be available at the event.The festivities are in collaboration with the Office of Supervisor Holly Mitchell, who is putting on her 3rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration & Resource Fair. The first CicLAvia took place in 2010. Since then, there have been 44 more events attended by over 1.8 million people, according to the CicLAvia website. (KRON) – A man has been arrested on suspicion of killing of a 50-year-old man in Pittsburg on Saturday.According to the Pittsburg Police Department, at 1:45 a.m, officers responded to the report of a man assaulting an individual near the intersection of Railroad Avenue and East Leland Road. Officers located an unresponsive 50-year-old male victim who was laying down on the ground. I-80 collision involving big rig diesel spill, one hospitalized Pittsburg police began providing life-saving measures, however, the victim succumbed to his injuries. Officers were able to locate the suspect, Juan Mendez-Medina of Pittsburg. The 46-year-old was arrested and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on one charge of murder, police said. (KRON) A Dolores Heights business owner is facing "break-in fatigue" after facing two separate break-ins incidents this week. Mom, 12-year-old daughter die in fiery Tesla crash in Santa Clara Dolores Deluxe is a corner store located on 22nd Street in San Francisco. The shop was founded in 1911, and it has been a staple in the city ever since, according to the company's website. The owner first noticed a broken window on Friday morning. BEIJING (AP) — The United States and China have failed to overcome their most serious disagreements but were able to discuss them in a potentially constructive way and have agreed to continue talks, U.S. officials said Sunday.The officials said Secretary of State Antony Blinken was able during a nearly 6-hour meeting to secure a visit to Washington by Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang. The elderly community in Dauphin is among the hardest hit by last week’s fatal highway crash, with many knowing friends who were on the bus.Residents of Dauphin are searching for answers and anxiously waiting for updates about the identities of the victims and the status of those who remain in hospital.“We just can’t imagine the devastation that families are having to cope with right now, and so our hearts go out to them,” said 90-year-old Florence Marchak.Fifteen people were killed and 10 were injured in Thursday’s fiery crash between a transport truck and a minibus that was carrying seniors from the Dauphin area to a casino near Carberry, Man., some 190 kilometres away.Six of the hospitalized patients remain in critical condition, Shared Health said in an update Sunday morning.Some of those on the bus involved in the crash are believed to be from St. George’s Place, a retirement home in Dauphin – the small community of 8,600 people northwest of Winnipeg.LATEST ON MANIT...Latest news
