SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Motorists were stranded in their vehicles on flooded roadways in typically idyllic Santa Barbara on Thursday, while nearby Oxnard got a month's worth of rain in a single hour in a storm that pummeled Southern California while Christmas travel got underway.The downpours targeted Ventura and Santa Barbara counties northwest of Los Angeles County overnight, swamping areas in the cities of Port Hueneme, Oxnard and Santa Barbara, where a police detective carried a woman on his back after the SUV she was riding in got stuck in knee-deep floodwaters.Between midnight and 1 a.m., the storm dumped 3.18 inches (8.08 centimeters) of rainfall in downtown Oxnard, surpassing the area's average of 2.56 inches (6.50 centimeters) for the entire month of December, according to the National Weather Service.The deluge prompted flash flooding in Ventura County around 1:30 a.m., the weather service said. Man dead after crashing into tree in North York

A man is dead following a single-vehicle crash in North York on Thursday night. Police say a vehicle struck a tree on Cummer Avenue in the area of Bayview Avenue and Steeles Avenue East around 6:43 p.m.The driver of the vehicle was transported to a nearby trauma centre with life-threatening injuries where he was later pronounced dead.There was no indication as to what may have led up to the crash.

Suspect identified in shooting death of Kleinburg man earlier this month

Police are searching for a 29-year-old in connection with the shooting death of a Kleinburg man earlier this month in North York.Investigators were called to Oakland Avenue just off Wilson Avenue around 6:30 a.m. on Dec. 9 for reports of a man lying on the roadway.Paramedics transported the man to the hospital via emergency run in life-threatening condition, where he was later pronounced dead.He was later identified as 36-year-old Roberto Lowndes of Kleinburg.Police have now issued a Canada-wide warrant for first-degree murder for Luis Miguel Eucebio Severino. He’s described as being five-foot-11, 174 pounds with a muscular build, black hair, black facial hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

SYDNEY (AP) — Australia batter Usman Khawaja has been reprimanded by the International Cricket Council for wearing a black armband in support of Palestinians in Gaza during the first cricket test against Pakistan.ICC regulations prevent cricketers from displaying messages of political, religious or racial causes during international matches.Khawaja was born in Pakistan and is the first Muslim to play test cricket for Australia.An ICC spokesperson confirmed the charge in breach of the clothing and equipment regulations to Australian media.“Usman displayed a personal message (armband) during the first test match against Pakistan without seeking the prior approval of Cricket Australia and the ICC to display it, as required in the regulations for personal messages,” it said. “This is a breach under the category of an ‘other breach’ and the sanction for a first offense is a reprimand.”The charge means Khawaja can accept a warning and continue to play. (WPRI) — The Office of Massachusetts’ Chief Medical Examiner has ruled the September death of a longtime New England Patriots fan a homicide, according to a release from Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey.Dale Mooney, a 53-year-old from Newmarket, New Hampshire, collapsed at Gillette Stadium on Sept. 17 after a physical altercation during a game between the Patriots and the Dolphins. GLENVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) - Firefighters and first responders responded to an explosion and fire on Maple Avenue in Glenville.
