Flooding has pushed Wisconsin’s Bad River closer to Line 5 pipeline: court documents

WASHINGTON — Heavy flooding throughout the U.S. Midwest has pushed the edge of the Bad River in Wisconsin ever closer to the controversial Line 5 pipeline. Court documents filed Monday show the river overtopped its banks twice last month for a total of nine days, washing away some 2.5 metres of terrain at its closest point. The Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa is in court to force the pipeline’s owner, Enbridge Inc., to redirect the line around its territory. The band has been arguing that seasonal flooding along the river escalates the risk of a catastrophic failure in a key watershed. The current river conditions do not require either a shutdown or a purge of the pipeline, under separate contingency plans submitted by both Enbridge and the band.But environmental law group Earthjustice disagrees, saying the line is now just one serious rainstorm away from becoming fully exposed. This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 2, 2023.The Canadian Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are falling Tuesday as shares of beleaguered banks tumble again and worries about a possible recession worsen. Rising fear has Treasury yields sinking in the bond market, as Wall Street also waits for the Federal Reserve’s latest move on interest rates and Washington edges closer to what would be a catastrophic default on U.S. government debt. The S&P 500 was 1.6% lower, with losses accelerating as the morning progressed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 520 points, or 1.5%, at 33,531, as of 11 a.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was 1.4% lower. Some of the sharpest drops came from smaller- and mid-sized banks, which have been under heavy scrutiny as the banking system shows cracks under the weight of much higher interest rates. (AP) — Both lanes of I-55 reopened Tuesday morning hours after a windstorm in central Illinois causing numerous crashes that killed at least six people Monday, police said.Six people were killed in a 72-car pileup late Monday morning near mile marker 76, between Diveron and Farmersville, about 20 miles south of Springfield. Multiple tractor-trailers were among the vehicles involved, two of which caught fire, Illinois State Police Maj. 'Motherhood' influencer convicted of lying about attempted kidnapping on social media

(KRON) – An Instagram influencer was found guilty by a jury in California after she made a viral video about a fake kidnapping, prosecutors said. Kathleen "Katie" Sorensen, 31, went viral in 2020 when she told her Instagram followers that two strangers tried to kidnap her children while she was shopping in Petaluma, in Sonoma County.The jury convicted Sorensen on one count of knowingly making a false report of a crime. After the verdict was reached, Judge Laura Passaglia remanded the "influencer" into custody and set bail at $100,000.Sorensen is now facing a maximum sentence of six months in jail. James McCallum was born with giant congenital melanocytic nevus, a condition in which pigment cells don't develop correctly.
